"This world get as e be..."
This world get as e be...
Three days ago, I went to get some stuffs for my mother at a supermarket.
The Supermarket is actually located on a busy road.
I couldn't find the specific brand of the product she wanted, so I decided to leave for another.
Stepping out of the supermarket, I noticed a scene. An old woman was almost knocked off by a car as she tried crossing the road.
Though she wasn't hit, she fell and struggled to move to the road side where she laid.
She was helpless.
I decided to help her move out of the road since others weren't willing to help.
I walked up to her, tapped her shoulders gently, greeted her and told her I wanted to help.
I could see the beam of smile on her face.
I helped her up, cleaned the dust off her clothes. I fixed up her little phone which fell to the ground in the process.
"Thank you my son, but abeg put the phone for your pocket gimme..." she said.
May I help you with the bag? I added.
She nodded in disagreement.
She needed to get to a nearby park where she could board a moving bus to her destination.
I had some more money on me... boarded a cab to the park. I paid for the fare.
On getting to the park, I enquired from her if this was the "nearby park" she was referring to? She then looked around, walked closer to a small bill board, stretched her hands towards the board... "Yes! this is the park" she said.
We got to the terminals where the transport fare was to be paid. She had little amount of money on her, it wasn't enough to get her to the preferred destination. I had some money in my bank account, with the help of the POS service, I was able to make a withdrawal.
I made the payment.
She was booked to leave in the next one hour, which I told her about. She was okay with the timing, maybe because she had no choice. Though, she was scared if I would leave her behind, I told her I won't. She was elated. We sat down somewhere... she began to ask me some questions, about my education, my parents, etc.
At some point, she was thirsty, I offered to get her satchet water. Before leaving... I decided to drop the phone with her, incase she might wanna make or receive some calls, but she insisted I hold it, she didn't wanna misplace it.
Minutes later, I brought two satchets of water... just then, I sighted my childhood friend, I told her I needed to say hi to my friend, she nodded her head in agreement.
I don't think I took three to four steps away from the old woman, when I heard someone screaming "thief" I didn't mind, I felt it wasn't my business... I got to where my friend was, she was elated and at the same time surprised to see me. We hugged each other, exchanged pleasantries and we began to talk.
Little did I know that the screaming about a thief, was targeted towards me.
The old woman was the person screaming "thief"... Some guys came to her aid, "that boy there don carry my phone, him go soon run, abeg catch am, collect my phone give me" she told the guys. The guys ran towards me, they enquired of the stolen phone.
I was confused, likewise my friend, because she knows I don't steal. They pointed at where the old woman was sitting, they told me exactly what she said about the phone. It then dawned on me that the old woman was the person screaming and she was referring to me.
Perplexed... I told the guys of how she asked me to keep the phone safe for her in my pocket.
Confused... One of the guys spoke, "na you bin come that terminal run payment give am abiii?
"Yes" I replied. I came to the park with her, I was to wait for her to get into the bus before I leave" I added.
They got to know that she was a random old woman I decided to help right from the supermarket, the woman I felt I was leaving, she thought I would go with her phone, the old woman explained.
I wasn't happy, why would she think such, despite the fact that I told her I wanted to have a word with a friend. I was disappointed... I had left the shopping I would have done for my mom, spent hours and resources in the process of ensuring she gets home safely and what would I have received in returned?
I would have been beaten up mercilessly, maybe burnt up to death, if not the fact that one of the guys thought I was her son.
Immediately, I returned the phone to her and left without saying a word.
We should be cautious of the kind of strangers and people we get along with, we should always be WISE.
It's good to help tho, but we need to have a spirit of discernment, not everyone out there wishes you the best.
The old woman in that write up maybe thought I was trying to run abscound with her phone, because of how she sees the world.
But bringing it to reality, some of the persons you help, love and smile with, are the indeed the actual people plotting your downfall.
WE NEED TO BE WISE!
For a truth ...this world get as e be!
